Alkaline Trio – This Addiction

I recently received a copy of the new Alkaline Trio album entitled This Addiction. This is The Trio’s seventh album and alk31by far the best record they have recorded in years. I first discovered Alkaline Trio when my cousin came over and told me I had to listen to the song Stupid Kid off of From Here To Infirmary. I instantly became a fan and went out and bought Goddammit.

On the albums Agony and Irony and Crimson I felt that The Trio were trying a little to hard, they just had way to many guitars being over dubbed. I also felt that Matt Skiba (guitarist) had plateaued and that he was relying more on pedals than talent to create new sounds.

This Addiction we find that The Trio has gone right back to their roots, with one guitar doing most of the work. Oh My God does it sound amazing. This record is clearly intended for the older fans and it shows. Naturally since this is an Alkaline Trio album we find ourselves listening to songs about drugs, alcohol heart breaks and break ups. The Trio stays right in their comfort zone and it shows. The song The American Scream is a perfect example of that with the lyrics

“And that’s where they found me/In the cemetery/A smoking gun in my hand now I’m damned for the land of the free”

Perfectly fits into every other Trio song out there.

With the song Lead Poisoning, their provided a pleasant surprise towards the end, a horn section. I know I was shocked to hear it too but it works and the guys knew what they were doing when they recorded it.

If you are a fan of Good Mourning or any Trio album before that one, pick up this album, you will not be disappointed. If you haven’t listened to the Trio in years, it will be like you never left. This is an album for all the fans but it will be especially meaningful for the older fans. The record hits stores February 23rd.
