Let the spring tours commence!

by Mary Stokes on February 26, 2010

Yay! Next week heralds the beginning of March. A new month, a new season and of course the start of the Spring tour season!!!

So, since I cannot blog about the ‘Night for Haiti’ (the event was, unfortunately, canceled), I thought I would give you a sneak peak of the bands I’m seeing in the next few weeks.

Looking back at my profile page, my student self proudly announced that I like to go to at least one gig a week. Well, that has unfortunately fallen by the wayside, but judging by next week’s shenanigans I should get my whole month’s fix of gigs in about 5 days.

1st off. March 1st!

It’s Lakeman o’clock! Yes, the 3 long months have passed and it is time to shake off my gig boots and get myself down to Northampton for the start of Seth’s (hopefully to be album-related) March tour. All the dates are seated, which will be a little strange, but I am open minded and I am hugely excited by the prospect of another year’s worth of gigs around the corner.

March 3rd.

Emily Portman. I recently reviewed her forthcoming album, The Glamoury, for Bright Young Folk and, whilst not entirely my cup of tea, you cannot deny talent when you hear it. This is Emily’s debut solo-release, though she has worked previously with the likes of Jim Causley (see last week’s blog) in the, now-disbanded, ‘The Devil’s Interval.’ I’m going to the gig with Christopher from Bright Young Folk, so I’m sure you’ll hear next week  how it went.

March 5th.

Kernow Bys Vyken!! Yep, it’s St Piran’s Day and so I am heading off for the 1st ever ‘Kernow in the City’ celebration of Cornwall and Cornishness. Auction for the Promise are supporting, as is Jackie Oates (she’s performing at SxSW — check her out!!) It promises to be a full on evening and, no doubt will have me packing my board into my car and heading full-pelt down the M5 in search of some surf by the end of the evening.

March 8th.

If I’ve not collapsed out of exhaustion, I’ll be going to see Jackie Oates’ brother – the legendary Jim Moray (who some of you may remember I ‘met’ on NYE). The evening is a ‘Folk Underground’ event, previewing some of the acts who are heading Texas-way the week after next for SxSW. This proves to be an awesome evening, and will be showcasing some real home-grown talent.

So, that’s what is coming up over the next few weeks, not including a very special St Patrick’s Day concert – Cara Dillon and Seth Lakeman at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf…. but that’s for another blog. If you are around at all in the UK, be sure to check some of these events out – you won’t be disappointed – and if you are heading out to SxSW be sure to check out some of the British acts vying for your attention.

But what about you, which acts are you jumping up and down in anticipation for? As always, please, let me know!
